Multiplex Selected For Fifty Fenchurch Street Development

Construction News Image
AXA IM Alts and YardNine have selected Multiplex to deliver the highly anticipated Fifty Fenchurch Street office development in the City of London.

The 650,000 sq. ft. project is set to become one of the UK's lowest-carbon and most biodiverse high-rise towers.

Following a Preconstruction Services Agreement (PCSA), Multiplex has now secured the Design and Build contract, with main construction work set to commence in August after the completion of piling and excavation.

Designed by Eric Parry Architects and engineering firm Arup, Fifty Fenchurch will be a 36-storey, all-electric commercial tower that aims to transform biodiversity within the city. The tower will feature vertical greening, with landscaped terraces on each office floor offering employees direct access to nature, enhancing workplace amenities. Public spaces will also include indoor and outdoor gardens, with a restaurant on the 10th floor offering panoramic views of London.

The project merges nature, smart technology, and cutting-edge design to create a sustainable, future-focused building that aims to set new standards in high-rise office space.

The first phase of construction will focus on an open bulk excavation for a three-level basement box that spans the entire footprint of the site. This space will include a new livery hall for the Clothworkers' Company, which has occupied the site since its founding in 1528.

In addition to the office tower, the development will see the conservation of two listed buildings: the All Hallows Staining Church Tower and Lambe's Chapel Crypt. Both structures will be integrated into a new 1,500 sqm public realm at ground level. The church tower will remain in place during construction, supported by a temporary grillage, while the crypt has been carefully removed for reinstallation later.

Karl Wilkinson, Project Director at Multiplex, said: "We're extremely proud to have been appointed to deliver Fifty Fenchurch on behalf of AXA IM Alts and YardNine. Given the historical significance of the site and the positive impact this development will have on London, this is an exciting project for Multiplex to be involved in.

"Once complete, the building will provide a state-of-the-art workplace that seamlessly integrates sustainability, biodiversity, and innovative design, redefining what it means to build for the future in one of the world’s most dynamic cities."
