The Lower Thames Crossing, a major new road link connecting Kent, Thurrock, and Essex, has reached a significant milestone following the completion of its formal examination process.

The 14.5-mile (23km) route will provide a crucial new connection between the A2/M2 and the M25, featuring two tunnels beneath the River Thames, one for northbound traffic and one for southbound traffic. The project aims to ease congestion, improve journey reliability, and boost economic growth in the region.

The Planning Inspectorate accepted the National Highways application for consideration on 28 November 2022, following its submission on 31 October 2022. Over a six-month Examination, the Examining Authority gathered evidence and considered views from local communities, statutory consultees, and other interested parties before making its recommendations to the Secretary of State on 20 March 2024.

This marks the 56th transport application examined under the Planning Act 2008, completed within the required statutory timeframe.

Local communities played a key role in the process, with residents, local authorities, and stakeholders given the opportunity to share their views and concerns. The Examining Authority carefully reviewed all input before finalizing its recommendations.

The project now awaits a final decision from the Secretary of State, which will determine whether the Lower Thames Crossing moves forward to construction. If approved, the development is set to be a landmark infrastructure project, easing pressure on existing Thames crossings and supporting growth across the South East.
