Hertfordshire County Council has announced the award of a new Highways contract to Ringway, marking the start of a long-term partnership dedicated to enhancing travel for residents and improving everyday journeys across the county.
The contract, set to commence on 1 October 2025, will focus on the efficient delivery of essential services such as road maintenance, pothole repairs, street lighting, and traffic signal maintenance. It will also oversee emergency response operations, seasonal gritting, grass cutting, and broader infrastructure improvement projects. Additionally, the agreement aims to promote sustainable travel by enhancing transport links that encourage walking, cycling, and wheeling, aligning with the county’s vision for a future-ready road network.
Ringway's successful tender included comprehensive plans for innovation and sustainability, incorporating ambitious apprenticeship programmes and opportunities for individuals facing employment barriers. A key component of the contract is the commitment to strengthening Hertfordshire’s local supply chain, supporting regional businesses and economic growth.
Building on previous technological trials, such as the pothole-preventing robot and the introduction of electric gritters, the new contract will further advance the council’s carbon-neutral ambitions. The partnership will explore cutting-edge solutions to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
The contract, valued at over £55 million per year, will initially run for seven years, with potential extensions based on performance and funding availability. It was awarded following a transparent and competitive 12-month tender process, ensuring the selection of a partner aligned with the council’s long-term transport and infrastructure goals.
