Wates Achieves Outstanding Score For Gartree 2 Prison Project

Wates has celebrated a significant achievement at the Gartree 2 prison construction site in Leicestershire, securing an impressive 44/45 score on its first visit under the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).

Gartree 2 is set to provide around 1,700 much-needed safe, secure, and decent prison places upon completion. Designed with sustainability in mind, the facility aims to achieve Net Zero in operation, contributing to the future of sustainable infrastructure.

Extensive site preparation has already been undertaken, including major earthworks, surface water diversion, badger sett relocation, and power line reconfiguration. With an anticipated peak workforce of approximately 1,250 people, the project team remains committed to maintaining the highest standards in safety, sustainability, and community engagement.

During the CCS evaluation, the project was praised for its outstanding performance in several key areas:

Community Engagement: Ongoing communication with Gartree village and HMP Gartree has minimised disruption, while initiatives such as a new community noticeboard and local employment opportunities have fostered strong community ties.

Environmental Responsibility: The project is delivering significant biodiversity net gains, including tree planting, bat and bird boxes, and natural habitat preservation. Sustainability efforts are further reinforced by the use of solar-powered equipment, an electric vehicle fleet, and robust waste management programs.

Health, Safety, and Wellbeing: The site features comprehensive welfare facilities, mental health support initiatives, and strict traffic management measures to ensure the safety of both workers and the local community.

Innovation in Construction: With 68% of houseblocks prefabricated offsite, the project is enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, and minimising environmental impact.
