Costain, the infrastructure solutions company, has appointed Alistair Geddes as its new rail sector director. Geddes, who joins from Balfour Beatty where he was operations director for its rail systems business, will support Costain's strategic focus on growth within the rail market and ensure continued high-quality project delivery.
His appointment comes on the back of a successful period for Costain's transportation division, which recently secured two substantial contracts for HS2. These include a £400m contract for tunnel and lineside mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems and a separate award, worth around £300m to the Siemens Mobility and Costain Joint Venture, to deliver high voltage power supply systems across the entire HS2 line.
Geddes brings experience from several major infrastructure programmes including Crossrail, Hinkley Point C Marine Works, and the transformation of the Olympic Stadium. At Balfour Beatty, he oversaw manufacturing facilities, frameworks, and projects for clients such as Network Rail, Transport for Wales, and Transport for London.
Jonathan Willcock, managing director, transportation, at Costain, commented on the appointment, highlighting the critical role of UK rail infrastructure and the challenges it faces. He stated that Geddes' experience "will support our rail sector growth as we continue to deliver the strategic needs of our customers."
Alistair Geddes himself noted Costain's "excellent reputation and heritage in delivering complex rail infrastructure," adding that he is looking forward to leveraging the company's expertise to "continue providing best-in-class infrastructure services to the rail industry."
This is Costain’s second senior appointment this year, following Eva Soto Pérez as engineering services general manager, as the company strengthens its full-service offering and consultancy capabilities.
The appointment of Geddes is a clear indication of Costain's ambition to capitalise on recent successes and further expand its presence in the rail sector.
