Millions Announced To Revamp Key Areas Of Wirral

Construction News Image
Wirral is set to receive a significant investment, with millions of pounds earmarked for major regeneration projects aimed at revitalising key areas of the borough.

As part of Wirral Council's £150 million-plus regeneration programme, funding will be allocated to projects across the waterfront at Woodside, Birkenhead town centre, Liscard, and New Ferry, with the goal of attracting investment, creating jobs, and boosting the borough’s long-term prosperity.

At a meeting on 12 March, Wirral Council's Economy, Regeneration, and Housing Committee approved a series of reports that will support the regeneration efforts. The projects will focus on bringing new homes, improving public spaces, and driving economic growth.

Among the key projects receiving funding are:

• New Ferry Regeneration: A further £3.4 million will be added to the £2.15 million already allocated, bringing the total funding to £5.56 million. Work in New Ferry is already underway, with plans to deliver dozens of new homes and improved public spaces.

• Birkenhead Market: An additional £2 million will be allocated to the ongoing revitalisation of Birkenhead Market, with completion expected by March 2026 and the final works leading to an anticipated opening in July 2026.

• Wirral Transport Museum: £1.5 million has been allocated to Big Heritage CIC for the renovation of the Wirral Transport Museum, contingent on a revised business case being submitted.

• Charing Cross & Grange Road, Conway & Europa Boulevard: A further £750,000 will be dedicated to these ongoing regeneration projects, helping to enhance the area’s infrastructure.

In addition to the plans, councillors have approved the submission of an application to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, requesting an extension of time to complete the Woodside Waterfront Infrastructure and New Ferry projects.

A key highlight of the funding includes the Levelling Up Fund, with £10.8 million secured from the government in November 2023 for the renewal of Liscard Town Centre. The funding will now be ringfenced for the project, which will be delivered by 2028. This decision allows work to continue on the Liscard regeneration project, and public consultation on initial designs is expected later this year, once the Policy and Resources Committee reviews the plans on 19 March.
