Plans to upgrade the A38/A368 crossroads between Churchill and Langford have been given the go-ahead.
The project, designed to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow, will transform the existing crossroads into a modern roundabout with smart traffic signals. The upgrade is expected to enhance not only car travel but also support local bus services, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The new design, which is based on feedback gathered from local residents and additional reviews through the 2024 Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) pause and review period, aims to create a safer and more efficient junction. Key changes include the introduction of controlled crossings on all four arms of the roundabout, ensuring safer access for pedestrians and cyclists. These crossings will also be equipped with audible and tactile devices to assist those with visual impairments.
Other major infrastructure improvements include:
• Conversion of the existing crossroads into a roundabout with smart signals at all four approaches.
• Priority for buses at the new roundabout, particularly along the A38 route.
• Four controlled crossings to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.
• New pavements to enhance safety for pedestrians.
• A northbound bus lane on the A38.
• A bus link on the west side of the roundabout to allow buses traveling along A368 Dinghurst Road to bypass the roundabout and merge directly onto the A38.
Cllr Hannah Young, Executive Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, said: "I am pleased to announce that work on the Churchill roundabout improvement scheme can now move forward. With North Somerset seeing an increase in visitors, residents, and workers, we need to adapt our road infrastructure to meet the demands of all forms of traffic."
Work on the new layout is expected to begin this autumn. Before construction starts, there will be a final opportunity for residents to submit formal comments on the design through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process.
