A consultation has opened inviting feedback from the Newton Heath community on what investments they would like to see in their district centre.
The engagement opportunity seeks to unlock the potential of the north Manchester neighbourhood as part of a city-wide initiative to improve and invest in local high streets.
The responses from local residents and businesses will inform the development of a long-term plan, called the Neighbourhood Development Framework (NDF), which will guide future improvements and development in Newton Heath.
The draft NDF outlines several key areas of focus for potential investment, including:
• Providing new, high-quality housing
• Creating a new public square and improving public spaces to make them safer, more welcoming, and enjoyable
• Expanding community facilities, such as the library
• Enhancing healthcare services in the area
• Revitalising the high street (Old Church Street) with improvements to the shopping environment
• Measures to reduce peak traffic congestion
• Making it easier to move around on foot or by bicycle
Local residents and businesses are encouraged to share their views by completing an online survey or picking up a paper copy of the survey at Newton Heath Library.
Two in-person drop-in events will also be held, where visitors can view display boards and speak directly with the project team to learn more about the plans. These sessions will take place at Newton Heath Library, Old Church Street, M40 2JB, on:
• Friday 28 February, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
• Saturday 1 March, from 09:30 am to midday
The consultation will run until Sunday 23 March 2025.
This project is part of the UK government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund, aimed at driving local regeneration and economic growth.
