Construction To Begin On Next Phase Of Gloucestershire Cycle Spine

Construction work on the next phase of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine through Gloucester City Centre is set to begin next month, with a drop-in event planned for locals to learn more about the project.

The scheme through Gloucester City Centre is a key part of the county council's plan to create a comprehensive cycle network spanning Gloucestershire, from Bishop’s Cleeve in the north to Stroud in the south, linking Gloucester and Cheltenham. This new phase aims to significantly enhance walking and cycling options, connecting homes, businesses, schools, and transport hubs while supporting the council’s goal of achieving carbon net zero by 2045 and creating a greener, more sustainable Gloucestershire.

The Gloucester City Centre cycle spine will provide the necessary infrastructure for new and improved walking and cycling routes through the heart of the city, linking to the wider Gloucestershire Cycle Spine network.

Montel Civil Engineering Ltd has been awarded the contract for the Northgate and Southgate Street sections of the cycle spine, from Parliament Street to The Tall Ship pub. The project will also include improvements to Llanthony Access Road, connecting Sudmeadow Road and Hemmingsdale Road, which will complete the Gloucester South West Bypass. Construction on the Gloucester City phase is scheduled to start on Monday, 10 March, with completion expected by late autumn 2025. Work on Llanthony Access Road is anticipated to begin later in the spring.

To give residents and businesses the chance to learn more about the project, a 'meet the contractor' event will be held on Wednesday, 5 March 2025, from 10am to 6pm at St John's Lane Northgate Methodist Church, Northgate Street, Gloucester GL1 2AN. The event will cover the Southgate Street, Northgate Street, and Llanthony Access Road elements of the project.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the project team, learn about the construction schedule, speak with the contractors' public liaison officer, and ask any questions they may have about the upcoming works.
