Work is set to begin next week (Monday, 3 March) on the redevelopment of the former home of the prominent Quaker Robson family in Darlington.
The project, funded by the Government, aims to transform the neglected four-storey, Grade II*-listed building on Northgate into high-quality office space for small businesses, contributing to job creation and the revitalisation of the town centre.
Acquired by Darlington Borough Council in June 2023, the building is part of a larger initiative to regenerate the town’s Northgate Conservation Area. The redevelopment is expected to breathe new life into the area, making it a hub for business growth and innovation.
The construction work will be managed by Compass Development NE Ltd., a company with extensive experience in commercial and residential developments across the North East. Planned alterations to the building will include modifications to improve accessibility, such as a new internal ramp and level access, as well as the demolition of a conservatory and external staircase. Mechanical and electrical services will be updated, and the building will receive new finishes and decorations throughout.
Despite having undergone numerous changes and ownerships over the years, the building has retained many of its original features, which will help ensure it offers superior office accommodation for businesses looking to start, grow, or relocate in the area.
Designed by award-winning Northeast architects Napper, the completed development will provide nearly 600 square metres of modern, accessible office, meeting, and storage space across four floors. The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the year, providing much-needed space for local businesses and contributing to the ongoing regeneration of Darlington's historic town centre.
