Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, has announced the appointment of construction firm JJ Rhatigan as the principal contractor for the highly anticipated Twyford Abbey development in Ealing.
This appointment signals a significant milestone in the transformation of the historic site into a vibrant, modern community.
Under the new agreement, JJ Rhatigan will lead the construction of 296 homes, with 50% of the units designated as affordable housing. The appointment follows the completion of initial groundworks, setting the stage for full-scale construction to begin. In addition to addressing the urgent need for housing, the development will also focus on preserving and enhancing the site's historical features. This includes the restoration of a Grade II-listed walled garden, which will be opened for community use, and the protection of existing trees and green spaces surrounding the site.
As part of the project, the iconic Twyford Abbey building will undergo a careful restoration in partnership with Picture Property Developments. The building will be converted into 30 new homes, maintaining its architectural heritage while providing much-needed residential space.
The development's design, led by the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), will prioritize sustainability and heritage preservation. The low-rise design will incorporate renewable energy solutions, including rooftop photovoltaic panels for electricity generation and Air Source Heat Pumps for heating and hot water, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and boosting energy efficiency. The project will also reopen the Abbey’s 1.2-acre South Lawn to the public for the first time in decades, further enhancing the community's access to green space.
Tom Neylon, UK Managing Director at JJ Rhatigan said: "We are delighted to have been chosen as the principal contractor for the Twyford Abbey development. This project offers a unique opportunity to blend contemporary housing solutions with the careful restoration of an important heritage site. We look forward to working with Latimer to deliver a high-quality, sustainable community."
With the contract now signed, construction is set to begin in March, with the first homes expected to be completed by 2027.
