Liverpool City Council's Cabinet will meet next week to consider a report that could pave the way for a new girls’ secondary school in Toxteth and the development of new community facilities for the African Caribbean community.
The report, which will be discussed on Tuesday, 25 February, requests that five council-owned parcels of land be made available for the Eden Girls' Leadership Academy, part of the Star Academies Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). The proposed site includes three parcels of land currently occupied by the African Caribbean Centre, a vital local community hub, which is located between Upper Parliament Street, Mulgrave Street, and Selborne Street.
The report also recommends the development of new facilities to continue supporting the African Caribbean community in the area. Council leaders have already engaged in discussions with the centre’s leaders, and a consultation process will soon begin to determine the best way to meet the community’s needs. This could involve either relocating the centre or developing new facilities nearby.
In addition to the three plots associated with the African Caribbean Centre, one further plot is currently leased to Liverpool Women’s Hospital for use as an overflow car park, while the final plot is vacant.
The move comes as Liverpool faces significant pressure to increase its secondary school capacity. The new Eden Girls' Leadership Academy will add 600 additional school places to the city, helping to address the growing demand for secondary education.
The school will have a Muslim faith designation, with the potential for up to half of its pupils to be Muslim, though the school will also be open to students of all faiths and none. It was approved under the Department for Education’s Free Schools programme, and Liverpool City Council is responsible for finding a suitable site.
If the Cabinet approves the report, the next step will be to move forward with securing the land and furthering the plans for the new school and community facilities. This development represents a significant investment in both education and community infrastructure in Toxteth.
