Work to resurface a section of the airfield at Mount Pleasant Complex in the Falkland Islands has been completed ahead of schedule, marking a significant milestone for the RAF’s critical overseas base.

Mount Pleasant Complex, operated by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) under UK Strategic Command, serves as a vital air link between the Falkland Islands and the UK. The £20 million resurfacing project, awarded to Mitie by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) in October, was crucial to maintaining the airfield’s operational capabilities.

The project involved removing 20,000m² of the airfield's operating surface and replacing it with high-quality asphalt, which was produced on-site in a specially constructed batching plant. The resurfacing took place on the Foxtrot taxiway and the threshold of the runway, the area where aircraft make their initial touchdown.

Specialist sub-contractors from the UK, some of whom also worked on last year's resurfacing of the Alpha Loop taxiway, carried out the work. All equipment and materials were shipped 8,000 miles from the UK, highlighting the logistical complexity of the project.

The completion of the resurfacing ahead of schedule ensures the continued reliability and safety of Mount Pleasant Complex as a key strategic asset for both the UK and the Falkland Islands.
