Cumberland Council has approved a series of major regeneration projects worth millions of pounds aimed at revitalising key areas in the region, including Carlisle, Millom and Workington.

The plans, which were approved at the Council's Planning Committee, focus on significant improvements to infrastructure, public spaces, and local facilities.

Key projects include:

• Workington Town Deal Plans: Approval was granted for land remediation work at Oldside, which will pave the way for future development of the Port of Workington as a clean energy and logistics hub, strengthening its position as a regional economic driver.

• Carlisle Market Hall: Listed building consent has been given for internal improvements to Carlisle Market Hall, including the potential removal of two clusters of market stalls to create an open seating area. The scheme is progressing in partnership with new leaseholders, Bearmont Group, and aims to rejuvenate this historic space.

• Carlisle Station Gateway: Plans for a new public car park and square at Court Square, south of Carlisle station, were approved. This is part of the £27 million Carlisle Station Gateway project, which will enhance the station's facilities and create a more inviting space for both residents and visitors.

• Devonshire Street, Carlisle: A proposal to upgrade the street’s lighting was also approved. Outdated wall-mounted lights will be replaced with modern, sleek architectural lighting, including LED bars to highlight the upper floors of buildings and improve the street's overall aesthetic.

• Millom Leisure Centre: Approval was granted for a new leisure centre as part of the Millom Town Deal. The centre will feature a swimming pool, sports hall, and fitness studios, creating a central hub for community activities and wellness.

The regeneration projects have been supported by UK Government funding, with all but the Market Hall plans already under development.
