Work has officially begun on a new 25-metre swimming pool at Pentwyn Leisure Centre, Cardiff, as part of an exciting upgrade to the facility.
The project, being carried out by Cardiff Council’s appointed contractor, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The new pool will feature a raised split floor, allowing the depth of the water to be adjusted for different activities. This movable floor will not only accommodate a variety of swimming and "splashing" activities but will also help reduce the energy required to heat the water, making it more sustainable.
In addition to the pool, the project includes a new children's wet play area designed to encourage interactive play. The area will feature water jets, sprinklers, mini slides, water tunnels, and tipping buckets, creating a fun and inclusive environment for children to enjoy.
Further improvements to the centre will include a refurbishment of the changing facilities and the reception area. The centre’s energy performance will also be enhanced with the installation of solar panels on the roof and an air source heat pump to heat the pool. These upgrades are part of Cardiff Council's commitment to its One Planet Cardiff climate change plan, aimed at reducing the centre's carbon footprint and operating costs.
Despite the ongoing construction, Pentwyn Leisure Centre will remain open to the public throughout the project, continuing to offer a range of services. These include a gym with 27 exercise stations, fitness classes, activities for children, and sports hall facilities for badminton and pickleball. The centre also boasts an outdoor 3G pitch for various sports.
