Construction is officially underway on a new 25-metre swimming pool at Pentwyn Leisure Centre, marking a major step in the facility's ongoing redevelopment. Appointed by Cardiff Council, the contractor will deliver a state-of-the-art pool with a split raising floor and a new children’s wet play area, alongside a series of other upgrades to modernise the centre.
The project, expected to be completed by the end of the year, includes a refurbished reception area and upgraded changing facilities. The centre will also transition to green energy sources, with roof-mounted solar panels and an air source heat pump helping to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. Importantly, the leisure centre will remain open to the public throughout the construction period.
Innovative Features for Accessibility and Fun
The new pool will include an adaptable, moving floor, allowing the water depth to be adjusted. This versatile feature will accommodate a variety of swimming and ‘splash’ activities, while also reducing the energy required to heat the water.
The wet play area is designed to encourage interactive and social play, featuring water jets, sprinklers, small slides, water tunnels, and tipping buckets—creating an inclusive and engaging space for children.
The upgrades align with Cardiff Council's One Planet Cardiff climate change commitments, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the centre. The addition of solar panels and an air source heat pump will enhance the building’s carbon performance while lowering energy costs.
Pentwyn Leisure Centre already offers a gym with 27 workout stations, fitness classes, children’s activities, and a multi-sport hall for activities like badminton and pickleball. An outdoor 3G pitch is also available, adding to the centre's diverse range of facilities.
