Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has awarded the contract for Phase 2 of its £100 million regeneration project to Farrans Construction, marking the next step in its ambitious transformation.
The project aims to enhance the passenger experience and boost economic growth in the region.
With the terminal extension (Phase 1) set for completion in summer 2025, Phase 2 will focus on refurbishing the existing terminal, with work expected to conclude by winter 2026. The improvements will modernise the airport, making it more efficient and accessible for travellers.
Farrans, a leading UK and Ireland-based construction firm, is already on-site delivering the 9,500m², three-storey terminal extension. This phase will introduce expanded seating, faster security checks, upgraded baggage reclaim and immigration areas, new shops, restaurants, and improved facilities for passengers with restricted mobility.
In Phase 2, the existing terminal will undergo a full refurbishment in multiple sub-phases to minimise disruption. Enhancements include new staircases, lifts, and escalators for a more open-plan feel, redesigned internal spaces for better passenger flow, upgraded security and arrivals facilities, and an expanded World Duty Free, shops, bars, and restaurants.
Beyond passenger benefits, the LBA: REGEN project is expected to have a significant economic impact, potentially creating 1,500 direct jobs at the airport and 4,000 indirect jobs by 2030, contributing £940 million to the local economy.
The regeneration will also support LBA’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with its 2030 Net Zero Carbon Roadmap. The project includes the installation of all-electric heating, energy-efficient lighting, and eco-friendly baggage belts, helping to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint. Additionally, the upgraded facilities are expected to attract airlines deploying their newest, quietest, and most efficient aircraft, further minimizing environmental impact.
