Passengers travelling between Portsmouth, Havant, and Fareham will face significant disruption from Saturday, 15 February to Friday, 21 February 2025, as Network Rail carries out critical engineering upgrades.
During the seven-day closure, sections of the railway will be shut, with rail replacement buses in operation to keep commuters moving.
Network Rail engineers will work around the clock at multiple sites in the Portsmouth area, focusing on key improvements aimed at boosting reliability and reducing future delays. Major works include:
• Portcreek Junction – Installation of 390 meters of new track, 450 meters of conductor rail, and replacement of two sets of points (movable track sections that allow trains to switch lines).
• Landport Viaduct (Portsmouth & Southsea Station) – Replacement of aging wooden wheel timbers with a high-tech synthetic alternative that lasts 30 years longer and requires less maintenance.
• Bedhampton Level Crossing – New track and ballast installation, along with a fresh coat of paint to improve visibility and safety.
• Quay Viaduct to Portchester – Removal of dead, diseased, and dangerous trees to reduce leaf buildup on tracks, improving train performance and safety.
• Fratton Footbridge – Structural refurbishment and repainting to bring the bridge up to modern loading standards.
These essential upgrades will enhance passenger experience by reducing the need for temporary speed restrictions, leading to smoother, quieter, and more reliable journeys in the long term.
Passengers are advised to check timetables in advance and plan alternative routes where necessary.
