Tata Steel UK has selected Skanska to lead the design and project management of its state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF) project, a major step toward low-carbon steelmaking in South Wales.

Under the agreement, Skanska's Technology division will be responsible for civil and structural design, including the foundations and structures for the new EAF, as well as site infrastructure and drainage. The project will be managed from Skanska’s Bridgend office, supporting local employment and fostering future growth in the region.

The new EAF, set to replace the site's decommissioned iron and steelmaking facilities, will have the capacity to produce three million tonnes of steel annually. Once operational at the end of 2027, the furnace is expected to slash steelmaking carbon emissions by 90%, a reduction of five million tonnes of CO₂ per year.
