Work is set to begin next week, Monday, 10 February 10, on a major upgrade to the canal towpath between Shepley Bridge Marina and Station Road in Mirfield, thanks to funding from the Transpennine Route Upgrade’s (TRU) First and Last Mile scheme.
The initiative, designed to improve access to and from stations along the TRU route, will see the Canal & River Trust undertake the transformation of the towpath, making it more accessible for pedestrians. The project aims to replace the current muddy and uneven path with a durable, all-weather surface, improving connectivity for the local community.
Once complete, the upgraded towpath will improve accessibility and encourage more people to use the route for walking and commuting, supporting sustainable travel options in the area.
Rachael Blake, Sponsor for TRU, said: "Our First and Last Mile scheme is progressing well through multiple projects across the route, with the first of these projects to be completed in Spring this year.
"The developments to Mirfield canal towpath that have been made possible by the scheme means better access for all, and Canal & River Trust’s work will greatly improve connectivity in the area."
