Ferrovial Secures £230m Contract

Ferrovial, through its UK construction division, has been awarded a £230 million contract to upgrade electricity infrastructure between Grain and Tilbury for National Grid.
The large-scale project, set to commence in early 2025 and run until the first quarter of 2029, reinforces Ferrovial's dedication to delivering innovative and sustainable infrastructure solutions in the UK.
This initiative is a key component of The Great Grid Upgrade, National Grid’s ambitious plan to modernise and strengthen the country's electricity network—the largest overhaul in generations. The project will be executed by an integrated joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and BEMO (Ferrovial BEMO JV). It includes the construction of a 2.2-kilometre high-voltage (400kV) cable tunnel, two deep shafts measuring 35 meters in depth (with diameters of 15m and 12m, respectively), as well as headhouses and Cable Sealing End (CSE) compounds.
Ferrovial BEMO JV will leverage cutting-edge engineering techniques and state-of-the-art technology to ensure high safety and efficiency standards. A key innovation in the project is the use of a Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM), a highly precise and reliable technology that enables simultaneous excavation and installation of the final lining from the surface. This method significantly reduces construction time, minimises environmental impact, and enhances safety. Notably, this will be only the second time VSM technology has been used in the UK, further highlighting the project's pioneering approach.
By integrating advanced infrastructure solutions, Ferrovial aims to support the UK's transition to a more resilient and modernised electricity grid, ensuring long-term energy stability for the nation.
