JTRE London has named JRL Group as the principal contractor for the £400m 220 Blackfriars Road project, a landmark mixed-use development in partnership with Southwark Charities.
JRL Group's £30 million contract includes piling, the construction of the basement box and the delivery of the superstructure. This appointment builds on the previous addition of EPR Architects to the project’s delivery team, ensuring a strong lineup of expertise.
The decision to move forward comes amid challenging market conditions highlighted by Deloitte's recent crane survey, which reported a 42% drop in office construction starts in London since April 2024. Despite this, JTRE London and JRL Group remain optimistic about the future of office construction and are committed to pushing ahead with the 220 Blackfriars scheme.
Once completed, the development is set to become a significant addition to the London skyline, demonstrating resilience and confidence in the capital's mixed-use and commercial property market.
Nigel Fleming, Managing Director at JTRE London, commented: "The appointment of JRL Group reflects our commitment to working with best-in-class partners at every stage of development, with JRL having an exceptional track record and a clear understanding of our vision and requirements for 220 Blackfriars. We firmly believe this will be a truly area-defining scheme, combining prime office space, affordable housing and community space.
"This builds on our strong track record in SE1 and is an example of how the private, public and charity sectors can work together to unlock much needed development."
