Sir Robert McAlpine has been named main works contractor for Tata Steel's £1.25 billion investment in low-CO2 steel production at the Port Talbot steelworks.
The company will oversee civil, structural, and building works for the construction of a new electric arc furnace-based facility capable of producing 3 million tonnes of steel annually. The project includes a new electric arc furnace, ladle furnaces, and associated infrastructure within the existing Basic Oxygen Steelmaking plant.
Set to begin in Q1 2025 with major works starting in Q3 2025, the three-year initiative supports Tata Steel UK's decarbonisation goals, aiming to transform Port Talbot into a hub for sustainable steelmaking. It also includes workforce upskilling to prepare for the transition to electric arc furnace technology.
Craig Allen, Managing Director, Industrial, Sir Robert McAlpine, said: "We are proud to be part of the decarbonisation of Port Talbot steelworks, which will play a pivotal role in turning the Port Talbot site into a world-leading hub for sustainable steel production. Our robust relationship with Tata Steel UK and long-standing industrial expertise makes us the ideal partner for this transformation. We look forward to working collaboratively, as part of a fully Integrated Project Team, to deliver the project successfully."
