Manchester Council's Project 500 Reaches Key Milestone

Manchester City Council's Project 500 housing initiative has reached a landmark moment as planning applications for the final developments in the programme’s first phase move forward.
The initiative, aimed at increasing the number of affordable homes on Council-owned land, continues to make significant strides with recent approvals and submissions.
Cheetham Hill Development Approved
Mosscare St Vincent's (MSV) has received planning approval for a major affordable housing project in Cheetham Hill. The development will deliver 70 new homes on Alderford Parade and Dinnington Avenue, including 26 one- and two-bedroom apartments and a range of two, three, and four-bedroom houses.
All the properties will be available at social rent, the most affordable level of rent, and will be built to low-carbon standards with EPC A ratings. Each home will feature an electric vehicle charging point, secure by design accreditation, and accessible options for ground-floor apartments. Residents will also benefit from private gardens and dedicated parking bays.
MSV is also advancing two additional Project 500 sites in Harpurhey, which will deliver 46 affordable homes. These include 12 homes for social rent, 16 at Manchester Living Rent, and 18 Rent-to-Buy properties.
Moston Development Submitted for Approval
The final planning application in the first phase of Project 500 has been submitted by One Manchester for a site off Moston Lane (Ref: 141682). If approved, the development will provide 29 Manchester Living Rent homes, including 18 one-bedroom cottage flats, seven two-bedroom houses, and four four-bedroom houses.
The Moston development features private gardens for houses, a landscaped shared garden for flats, and private car parking spaces for all properties. This marks the last tranche of 357 homes under the initial phase of Project 500.
Other Sites in Development
One Manchester is also progressing with two additional Project 500 schemes. A development on Blackwin Street in Gorton will provide seven new homes, ranging from two- to four-bedroom houses. Meanwhile, a site on Brigham Street in Openshaw will deliver 24 houses and flats, including two-bedroom flats and two- to four-bedroom homes.
The Council's Project 500 is part of a broader effort to address Manchester’s housing challenges by maximising the use of Council-owned land. With an emphasis on affordability, sustainability, and accessibility, the programme is a key component of Manchester’s commitment to delivering housing that meets the needs of its residents.
