Plans to transform access to health and leisure facilities in Sheerness have been approved, marking a significant milestone for the area.
Swale Borough Council's planning committee has given the green light to an ambitious expansion and refurbishment of Sheppey Leisure Centre, proposed by Alliance Leisure on behalf of the council. The project, based in Beachfields, is a centerpiece of the £20 million Sheerness Revival programme, funded by the UK Government. This initiative aims to enhance health, education, and leisure services while creating new job and training opportunities for residents.
The approved plans include a substantial upgrade to the existing facilities, including:
• Improved GP Services: A modernised and more accessible GP surgery will relocate to the ground floor.
• Enhanced Leisure Amenities: A new adventure play area and a tag active course – a dynamic obstacle activity for kids and adults – will be added to encourage fitness and fun.
• Expanded Gym Facilities: The gym will be refurbished and expanded, incorporating the Innerva gym from the pool building to unite all dry-side facilities under one roof.
• Purpose-Built Space for Sheppey Matters: The award-winning health and well-being charity will gain a custom-designed space to continue its vital work in the community.
• New Café: A fresh café space will complement the enhanced leisure offerings.
The exterior will also see improvements, including a new adventure golf course themed around local heritage and attractions, and an outdoor gym. These additions aim to promote pride in the area while encouraging outdoor activity.
The leisure centre upgrades are part of a broader Sheerness Revival programme. Other approved projects include the expansion of Sheppey College and the refurbishment of Masters House, which will be converted into workshop spaces.
