Islington Council Launches Consultation On Climate Action Guidance

Construction News Image
Islington Council has unveiled two draft guidance documents aimed at helping residents, businesses, and developers combat climate change by making buildings more energy efficient and fostering a greener, healthier borough.

The consultation seeks feedback on the draft Climate Action Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) and the Retrofit Handbook, both of which provide practical advice on reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability in line with the council’s ambitious climate goals.

The draft Climate Action SPD offers detailed planning advice to ensure new minor and major developments adhere to the borough’s sustainable design policies as outlined in Islington's Local Plan. The guidance covers topics such as energy efficiency, renewable energy installations, water conservation, and sustainable design standards, equipping developers with tools to address climate change and meet Islington’s carbon reduction targets.

Complementing the SPD is the Retrofit Handbook, designed to help residents and businesses enhance energy efficiency in existing buildings. It provides step-by-step advice on upgrades ranging from simple measures like installing LED lighting and draughtproofing to more comprehensive projects such as loft insulation and solar panel installations.

The handbook addresses the unique challenges of Islington’s diverse housing stock, including historic and heritage properties, and offers solutions tailored to local needs.

Both documents reflect input from the community, with the handbook shaped by feedback gathered during consultations on the SPD in 2023. By offering accessible, practical guidance, the council aims to empower residents and businesses to take meaningful steps toward addressing the climate emergency and reducing energy costs amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
