Durham County Councillors have approved plans by Persimmon Homes Durham to build 170 new houses in the Templetown area of Consett.

The development will include a mix of two- to five-bedroom homes, ranging from terraced and semi-detached to detached properties. 17 of the homes will be designated as First Homes, offered at a discount to market value to support affordable housing needs. The designs will blend contemporary styles with elements that reflect Consett's local heritage.

Persimmon Homes Durham will contribute over £970,000 in section 106 funding, including £530,000 for local secondary education and £82,000 for healthcare. The development will also feature a 1.8-kilometre network of pedestrian and cycle paths, children’s play areas, and significant public open space equivalent to eight football pitches. Each home will come equipped with electric vehicle charging points and photovoltaic panels, supporting sustainability.

In addition, a heritage trail will be established on the site, with interpretation boards highlighting the area's rich history, providing an educational and cultural benefit to the community.
