Final Phase Of Cambridge Development Complete

The final phase of the Buchan Street development in Cambridge is now complete, with tenants preparing to move into their new council homes.

Local councillors and the Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP) celebrated this milestone, highlighting its impact on the King's Hedges ward and the broader community.

The Buchan Street development, along with the nearby Meadows project in Arbury Ward, has revitalised the area by replacing former community facilities with modern, sustainable housing and a state-of-the-art community centre. Opened in 2023, The Meadows community centre now serves as a vibrant hub, complemented by 106 new council homes across both sites. The development also features a Sports England-approved football pitch, a public plaza, and retained café and shop spaces, maintaining the area’s focus on social and recreational activities.

At Buchan Street, 28 one- and two-bedroom council apartments have been completed, all designed to be wheelchair accessible and adaptable for residents with reduced mobility or chronic health conditions. One unit is specifically tailored for wheelchair users, demonstrating the city's commitment to inclusivity.

Sustainability is at the core of the project, with the homes being gas-free and equipped with advanced insulation to minimise heat loss. Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems ensure excellent air quality, while communal air-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic panels, and biodiverse green roofs enhance energy efficiency and environmental impact.

Infrastructure for electric vehicle charging, along with ample cycle storage, supports sustainable travel options for residents. Future-proofed with additional charging point capabilities, the development aligns with Cambridge’s vision for a low-carbon, sustainable future.

Tom Hill, Managing Director of The Hill Group commented: "This completion of Buchan Street and our forthcoming Meadows development highlights our ongoing commitment as a partnership to delivering affordable, sustainable housing while fostering community cohesion and enhancing the local environment. Together we are creating a more inclusive and vibrant Cambridge."
