Trains are now running again between Newquay and Par in Cornwall following emergency repairs completed by Network Rail.

Engineers worked around the clock in difficult conditions to rebuild a retaining wall on an embankment near the Pontsmill viaduct. The wall had collapsed into the river below, displacing a large amount of ballast—the stones that secure the railway track in place.

To restore stability, several piles were driven into the river to support the railway, and new ballast was laid down to secure the track.

The repairs were unrelated to the ongoing engineering works aimed at creating the Mid Cornwall Metro. Network Rail's swift response has successfully reopened the route, allowing trains to resume service.
