Network Rail has announced plans for to refurbish the historic footbridge at Ravenglass station on the Cumbrian Coast Line.
Originally built in 1849, the beloved structure was initially slated for minor repairs this autumn, but engineers determined that its condition required a more extensive restoration.
The refurbishment work is set to begin in February 2025. The entire footbridge will be dismantled and transported to a specialist facility where it will be repaired and fully repainted to reflect its historic appearance. The approach allows trains to continue running without interruption during the process.
Once repairs are complete, the footbridge will return to Ravenglass station for reinstallation, including a new timber deck and rigorous safety checks. The structure is expected to reopen to passengers and the public in May 2025.
Temporary Closure and Pedestrian Diversions
While the work is underway, the footbridge will remain closed. Network Rail has collaborated with Cumberland Council and the Lake District Council to establish safe pedestrian diversion routes, complete with signage and barriers, ensuring passengers can access both platforms. Access to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Heritage Railway will not be affected.
