Plans to revamp the Ipswich Regent Theatre and elevate the experience for all theatregoers have been approved by Ipswich Borough Council's planning department. The project will modernise the Grade II listed venue, with a focus on enhancing accessibility, preserving its historic charm, and improving customer facilities.
Central to the redevelopment is the refurbishment of the theatre's iconic front canopy. Inspired by its Art Deco heritage, the design will feature illuminated lettering and geometric lighting to complement the street scene along St Helen's Street and improve access to the town centre.
Accessibility upgrades include a refurbished entrance with direct access to the foyer, a new lift to the Circle Lounge, and a dedicated "Wall of Fame" mural celebrating the theatre's storied history. Inside, original 1929 features such as full-height ceilings and Art Deco light fixtures will be reintroduced, while modernised bars, the Crush Hall, and the Circle Lounge will provide more seating and faster service times.
Facilities will also see a significant overhaul. A single-storey extension at the rear of the theatre will add more toilets, including accessible restrooms in the Circle Lounge and a Changing Places facility on the ground floor.
The project is fully funded by a Restoration Levy introduced in June 2023, which applies to tickets over £10. All proceeds are dedicated to refurbishing, improving, and maintaining the theatre.
With planning consent secured, procurement efforts will now begin. Construction is set to start in May 2025, with completion expected by December of the same year. During the renovation, most shows will relocate to the Corn Exchange, ensuring minimal disruption to Ipswich's vibrant arts scene.
