Costain is set to move into the execution phase of two major East Coast Cluster projects, solidifying its role in advancing carbon capture and storage initiatives on Teesside.
As a delivery partner, Costain will oversee the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCm) of the Northern Endurance Partnership's (NEP) onshore CO2 gathering system and related utilities for Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power).
Costain is among nine prominent engineering and construction firms chosen by NZT Power and NEP to execute this £4 billion investment program. The initiative includes developing the world's first gas-fired power station integrated with carbon capture and storage.
NZT Power aims to lead in decarbonising power generation, while NEP's infrastructure will support CO2 transportation and storage for three interconnected carbon capture projects: NZT Power, H2Teesside, and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture.
The projects have now transitioned into the execution phase, with construction slated to begin in mid-2025. The facilities are expected to be operational by 2028, marking a significant milestone in the UK's journey toward net-zero emissions.
