Bristol City Council Expands Programme To Deliver Affordable Housing

Bristol City Council is pressing ahead with its plan to build new council homes across the city, providing safe, secure, and affordable housing for families.

The latest phase of the council's new-build programme includes more than 140 homes under construction at three sites: the former Cameron Centre in Lockleaze, Leinster Avenue in Knowle West, and Filwood Broadway.

In addition, the council's Housing Delivery team has seven more sites under construction, adding 130 new council homes to the city. Recent completions include 28 homes at St Peters in Horfield, with 57 homes in Lawrence Weston and 16 homes at New Kingsland in Henbury set to be finished in the coming weeks. Since the programme began in 2014, nearly 500 council homes have been delivered.

The council is using smaller brownfield sites to create high-quality, sustainable homes with strong environmental credentials. Each property boasts excellent thermal insulation and energy-efficient heating systems powered by ground or air source heat pumps. These systems reduce carbon emissions and are designed to significantly lower household utility bills.

Future plans include the development of additional council homes at Branwhite Close, Romney Avenue in Lockleaze, the former Greville Elderly Person’s Home in Stockwood, and the former Brunel Ford garage on Muller Road. These projects will deliver over 100 new social rented and shared ownership homes in the coming months.

To further meet housing needs, the council is exploring low-carbon Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), which promise to increase the pace and scale of delivering sustainable, affordable homes. The Housing Delivery team is also working on a long-term pipeline of projects to address the city's housing demand.
