Birmingham City Council has appointed three retrofit contractors to spearhead a large-scale effort to retrofit more than 3,000 homes across the city each year.

The project aims to tackle fuel poverty and improve energy efficiency in some of Birmingham's most deprived areas.

The initiative will see the installation of modern energy-saving measures, including insulation upgrades, improved ventilation systems, more efficient heating solutions and solar panels. While the program will primarily focus on privately owned homes, it will also provide an opportunity to enhance energy efficiency in social housing.


The council has partnered with City Energy Network Ltd, Next Energy Solutions Ltd, and Golden Globe Merchants Ltd to implement the scheme. Together, they aim to leverage up to £45 million annually from the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) programme—a government-backed initiative funded by major energy companies to improve home energy efficiency.

By reducing energy consumption, the project is expected to cut fuel bills for thousands of families, providing much-needed financial relief while advancing the city’s sustainability goals.
