Work has commenced on a groundbreaking £18.9 million affordable housing project in Newstead, South East Sheffield, aiming to set new standards in sustainable living.
Esh Construction, a leading contractor in the North of England, is spearheading the development of 77 eco-friendly homes in partnership with Sheffield City Council. Designed by Peak Architects, the project prioritises sustainability and energy efficiency while delivering much-needed affordable housing.
The site will include 36 one- and two-bedroom apartments, each featuring communal gardens and balconies, alongside 41 two-, three-, and four-bedroom houses equipped with off-street parking and private gardens. In a significant shift from traditional practices, all homes will be fitted with air source heat pumps instead of gas boilers, along with enhanced insulation and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, underscoring the development's commitment to a zero-gas future.
This initiative reflects Sheffield City Council’s dedication to advancing sustainable housing and supporting the city’s green goals while providing modern, energy-efficient homes for its residents.
Esh Construction’s Operations Director, Simon Woodward, said: "This project underscores our commitment to delivering more sustainable and future-proofed housing that meets the needs of the community and supports the transition to greener living.
"Marking the first affordable homes Esh will deliver for Sheffield City Council, we are proud to be supporting the council's goal to develop energy efficient housing stock that will reduce the environmental impact and ensure long-term affordability for residents. We look forward to showcasing progress over the coming months."
Sheffield City Council has been awarded £1.3 million of funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund towards the Newstead development.
