Morgan Sindall To Deliver £22m ALN School

Families in Penarth will soon benefit from a new £22 million school designed specifically for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALNs).

Named Ysgol Llyn Derw by its students, the project is being delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction after the previous contractor, ISG, entered administration.

Situated near Cosmeston Country Park, the new school will serve as a second site for the highly regarded Ysgol Y Deri, which gained national attention through the BBC documentary A Special School. The facility will cater to 150 pupils with a wide range of complex disabilities, providing bespoke education supported by state-of-the-art technology.

The two-storey building is designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings and will feature outdoor spaces for teaching, sports, play, relaxation, and social activities. The architecture will enhance accessibility while creating a calming, inclusive environment.

In line with Morgan Sindall's commitment to sustainability, Ysgol Llyn Derw will incorporate green roofs, solar panels, and a hybrid generator to minimize its carbon footprint. Natural light and ventilation will be maximized, and energy-efficient materials will contribute to a carbon-neutral finish. The project also aims to boost local biodiversity through eco-friendly design features.

Rob Williams, Area Director of Morgan Sindall Construction in Wales, said: "It's a real pleasure to be working on Ysgol Llyn Derw such an important facility for the area. We can all see the demand for SEND schools rising, so it means a lot for the whole team to work on this specialised learning facility, supporting families and helping the next generation achieve their full potential.

"In collaboration with Vale of Glamorgan Council and Morgan Sindall, this project is set to create an environment that will inspire pupils and provide the support that they need."
