Sutton Council has announced a partnership with Genr8 Kajima Regeneration Ltd (GKRL), a leading European regeneration specialist, to deliver the next phase of the town centre’s transformation.
The plans include the redevelopment of key sites such as the St Nicholas Shopping Centre, Civic Offices, Gibson Road car park, and the Secombe Theatre, with the centerpiece being a new Civic Hub in the heart of the town.
The proposed Civic Hub, slated for completion by mid-2029, will provide residents with a central access point for council services and its partners, right on the high street. The Hub will also feature a new library and community spaces, creating a vibrant civic presence in the town centre.
As part of the regeneration, around 740 new homes will be built across the existing Civic Offices, Gibson Road car park, and Secombe Theatre sites. Half of these homes will be designated as affordable housing, with nearly 300 available for social rent to support local families. The plans also include improvements to public spaces and enhanced access to the town centre.
In addition to residential development, the regeneration project will revitalise the St Nicholas Shopping Centre by introducing new retail space and leisure facilities, creating opportunities for both existing and new businesses. The mix of activities aims to offer Sutton residents and visitors a fresh experience while boosting the local economy.
This decision follows recent successful initiatives in the town centre, including the openings of Oru Sutton and Throwley Yard, plans for a new Sutton College location on the High Street, and the construction of new council homes at Beech Tree Place and Elm Grove.
With GKRL now on board, the regeneration project is expected to significantly enhance Sutton's town centre, delivering modern facilities and housing to meet the needs of the growing community.
