Amey has secured an additional £800 million in contracts as part of the £2 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade West Alliance (TRUWest) project.
The next phase focuses on comprehensive railway improvements between Huddersfield and Leeds, aimed at enhancing travel by delivering more frequent, reliable, and eco-friendly services for the North of England.
Working collaboratively with Amey’s key partners - Arup, BAM, and Network Rail - the TRUWest Alliance will deliver upgrades to six stations, improving facilities and accessibility, and construct nine new bridges and one viaduct, allowing tracks to be re-aligned, electrified, or increased in number to enable faster, more frequent electric trains. A new railway siding in Huddersfield will be built enabling significant improvements at Huddersfield station to be completed.
Signalling work across 28 miles of route will increase reliability and reduce delays, while an increase in tracks from two to four between Huddersfield and Ravensthorpe will reduce journey times and congestion. The installation of overhead line equipment (OLE) will support the reduction of the UK’s carbon footprint and improve air quality, and new tracks and drainage will increase line speeds and enhance service reliability.
Peter Sollitt, TRU West Alliance Managing Director, said: "This is a major achievement and testament to the hard work and commitment from all members of the West Alliance. We recognise the significance of the largest single contract by value that Network Rail has awarded and take that responsibility very seriously. I would like to thank all those involved in getting us to this point and look forward to celebrating our continued success as a key part of the TRU programme."
Andy Milner, CEO at Amey, said: "This is fantastic news for Amey and our Alliance partners, recognising the positive impact our exceptional expertise and collaboration has delivered since 2017. We have delivered key outputs, such as Manchester to Stalybridge electrification, which has recently seen the first electric passenger trains; provided innovative solutions, such as the new Ravensthorpe Viaduct; as well as environmental and sustainable commitments to help achieve Network Rail’s net zero carbon targets. We’re looking forward to the next five years, working together on the Alliance to help shape and enhance the future of rail travel across the North."
