Wates Group has been selected as the contractor by Cardiff council to deliver its transformational redevelopment of the Channel View estate in Grangetown.
The scheme is the largest and most exciting holistic estate redevelopment within the Council's development programme and will deliver up to 400 new highly energy-efficient, low-carbon mixed-tenure homes, including the replacement of the existing 180 Council-managed properties.
Wates already partners with the Council on the Cardiff Living housing programme, which is delivering 1,700 new homes, a mix of council homes and private homes to buy, across the city.
Cabinet Member Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "We have now appointed Wates to deliver the entirety of this exciting regeneration scheme. The project will transform the Channel View estate and increase the availability of good quality, affordable housing, for which we are so desperate at the moment, as well as providing homes for sale for people who want to buy in this area at affordable prices.
"Our £500m Cardiff Living programme with Wates will deliver more than 1,700 new homes for the city, including around 1,000 council homes and is a tremendous success, based on our shared vision of high quality and low carbon standards. We look forward to building on that solid foundation and delivering the new Channel View homes together over the next few years."
Edward Rees, Regional Managing Director for Wates' Residential business in Wales, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have been successful in securing this prestigious contract to deliver this major project at Channel View, with the creation of 400 new and affordable homes for a city in desperate need of housing. It has been very rewarding to work with Cardiff Council on our shared commitment to build beautiful new homes, without compromising on high quality or energy efficiency. Channel View is a huge project and we look forward to transforming it as we work through the different phases.
"Wates' pride and specialism are in building more than homes, we regenerate and transform areas and communities. The opportunity to create great facilities and open spaces that work with nature will bring in our design and planning expertise to create a wonderful development from start to finish."
Wates will deliver the entire Channel View project, commencing with the Phase 1 plans for older people’s accommodation to replace the existing tower block at the estate, as well as new communal facilities and a café. These accessible and adaptable apartments will promote independent living for older people.
The redevelopment will provide better connectivity for the estate and the wider community to local facilities and transport links, improvements to the public open space at The Marl, and the creation of well-managed, attractive public realm.
