The Environment Agency has announced a drop-in event for residents in Bewdley to learn about the upcoming Beales Corner Flood Risk Management Scheme.
The new scheme aims to protect homes and businesses for when the River Severn floods. Planning permission for the scheme was approved earlier this year and work is set to begin on the site this summer. The project is expected to take 18 months to two years to complete.
Beales Corner is an area with a history of flooding. Most recently in 2020, 2021 and 2022 when homes and businesses were flooded, and the wider community impacted.
In 2020 funding was made available to protect the area. Preparatory work began on the scheme in February with the removal of vegetation along the waterfront area. Topological surveys of the riverbank have also taken place as well as the organisation of utility diversions.
The drop-in event will take place on Tuesday 27 June at St George’s Hall in Load Street in Bewdley from 12 noon to 7pm.
Commenting on the event, Environment Agency Operations Manager for the West Midlands Anthony Perry said: "We're looking forward to welcoming residents to our drop-in event and answering any questions they may have before construction begins. The project is a much-needed flood risk management scheme for Beales Corner. Flooding can be devastating, and this scheme will help to significantly reduce the risk of flooding to the town."
