TerrAffix, an RSK Group firm, and construction company Kier are starting a feasibility study to examine how vegetation removed from highway projects might be utilised on site to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Pyrolysis is the conversion of organic compounds into solid carbon at high temperatures and little to no oxygen, and it is this process that yields biochar.
The purpose of the study is to determine whether huge highway projects' removed vegetation may be processed locally using a mobile pyrolysis plant, with the intention of using the resulting biochar in the landscaping programme, which is carried out after construction is complete. The study will outline how best to use the biochar to gain maximum benefit from the overall scheme.
The strategy lowers expenses and carbon emissions, among other advantages. Often, vegetation on site is removed using large vehicles such as lorries, which increase a project's carbon emissions. After processing the vegetation, a slow carbon is produced.
