Construction firm GRAHAM has appointed Middlesbrough contractor ZTL Contracting help create a huge 150,000-tonne platform for the South Bank Quay.
The regional supplier will use innovative cutting-edge techniques and specialist equipment for the works – with between 100,000 and 150,000 tonnes of material used which would otherwise be sent to landfill.
Landside work at the South Bank Quay is due to be complete in summer of 2023, with planned completion of the entire project due ahead of schedule in late autumn 2023.
This new contract comes on the back of Rainton Construction Ltd - part of the MGL Group - beginning work on the vital South Bank Link Road to unlock access to the SeAH monopile manufacturing project with a mile-long route.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: "The ground-breaking work at South Bank Quay will unlock access to the River and the North Sea, which will open the door to thousands of jobs being created on the Teesworks site.
"This is another example of a Teesside business being used on a game-changing project to support jobs in the heart of our region.
"It's also innovative and a further example of us continuing strive to hit our carbon net zero targets.
"Progress at Teesworks is roaring with the South Bank link road, SeAH's vast piling activity and the Quay all coming together. We are seeing drawings on a page becoming reality ahead of schedule – and I can’t wait for more progress to be made in 2023."
Work will see a Wirtgen Stabilisation Rig called into action. Materials are blended on site with lime and cement to create a viable engineering fill in a method which reduces the carbon footprint of the project by drastically reducing transport requirements.
