Dura Products Helps Colas Reduce Emissions On A46 Highway Project

Green construction innovators, Dura Products, is helping leading UK infrastructure contractor Colas, reduce scope 3 Co2e emissions from its latest highways project on the A46 at Stoneleigh by over 82,000kg.

2,680 metres of the company's eco-friendly lightweight, heavy duty combined kerb and drainage system, Duradrain, will be installed as part of the project, which involves the construction of a new bridge over the A46 and the realignment of slip roads to form the basis of a new gyratory system which will reduce delays and improve road safety in the future.

One of the key aims of the project was to ensure a low environmental impact by using low carbon materials and technology. Made from 70% recycled material, Duradrain offers savings of over 30,000kg for every 1,000m of Combined Kerb & Drainage units installed when compared with traditional solutions it provides an eco-friendly, efficient and safe method of draining highways or indeed any structure with a kerb edge.

Steve Bennett, Managing Director of Dura Products commented: "We are delighted to have been selected to supply Duradrain for the A46 Stoneleigh project. This is an important partnership for us as there is a strong focus on the carbon outputs; CEEQUAL, a sustainability assessment scheme will provide third party endorsement of the project’s eco performance, so we are very proud to be involved.

"Duradrain is one of our flagship products and is a perfect solution for the A46 project as it is sustainable, efficient and safe. Differently from other systems, combined kerb and drainage solutions collect run-off continually and quickly which helps extend the life of a project and improve the conditions for users and their safety, particularly with highway projects such as the A46. Unlike the traditional kerb and gully method where flows compound on the surface, the collected run-off is contained and driven to outlets hidden within the channel body. As the kerb-lines are traditionally set at a low point, the levels on site can be simplified using one-directional cross-fall/camber to deliver surface water to the kerbside."

Ian Burton from Hauraton UK, who supplied and distributed the materials on site, added: "As a main distributor of Duradrain, Hauraton UK were extremely pleased to have been involved with its supply to the A46 Stoneleigh project. To supply a product which has a high recycled content fits in with our already comprehensive range of recycled and sustainable products, and is why we work closely with Dura Products.

"In the current climate it is very important to consider the environment and carbon footprint. So, to be part of a supply chain that can deliver a successful project and meet this requirement is a great success."
