Over 100 New Council Homes 'On Track' In Adur

Construction News Image
Over 100 new homes are on track to be completed by Adur District Council to help tackle the social housing shortage in the district.

The Council is reviewing under-used land it owns across Sompting, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate to find anywhere that it could build new homes.

Work is expected to begin within months on 19 homes that will be built on the site of garage blocks at Leconfield Road in Lancing, at Gardner Road in Fishersgate and at St Giles Close, Sylvan Road and Wilmot Road in Shoreham. Planning approval has been granted for every site and the Council is in the process of appointing construction firms for the projects, backed by £566,000 of government funding.

Planning applications are also expected to be considered soon for 16 homes on garage sites at Daniel Close and Gravelly Crescent in Lancing.

The conversion of two semi-detached Council houses in Albion Street, Southwick, into six flats for temporary accommodation is expected to be completed within months. Separately, the Council's development of 49 new homes in Albion Street is expected to be completed in April 2023.

Adur's planning committee is also expected to make a decision within months on the Council's application to demolish Ashcroft House in Shoreham and replace it with 44 homes for the over 55s.

Cllr Carson Albury, Adur District Council's Cabinet Member for Adur Homes and Customer Services, said: "This is really important work, turning our under-used Council land into new homes. It is vital for the over 800 Adur residents already on our housing waiting list.

"I've visited our sites when they were in progress, and have also been there when people have moved into new properties. It's fantastic to see the progress we've made and are continuing to make, but we recognise that more still needs to be done."

Among other investments the committee will consider will be the proposed use of £25,000 of developers' contributions to replace ageing play equipment and the play area safety surface at Adur Recreation Ground.

The Council is also looking for a site to build a new larger, accessible toilet in the district after securing a £100,000 grant from Changing Places, an organisation that works to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
