GMI Construction Group is one of the largest privately owned construction companies in North England and the Midlands.
They have over 35 years of experience delivering award-winning projects for public and private clients throughout the UK. The company works within numerous sectors, such as automotive, hospitality, and residential, and their key capabilities include design and build, fit out and refurbishment, regeneration, infrastructure and engineering solutions.
In 2021, GMI began work on a new 133,118 sq. ft. office HQ building in Leeds City Centre. The landmark design is estimated to have a duration of 80 weeks and will provide seven floors, including podium parking and amenity below. The building will be constructed in line with the very latest human health and wellbeing standards, and BREEAM Excellent standards will be targeted.
Due to the residential area and busy city centre location, GMI was liable for ensuring the public's health and safety were maintained from start to finish. This included ensuring the surrounding vicinity was kept tidy for the residents and other businesses.
To adhere to Leeds City Centre requirements and follow the duty of care when proceeding with works, GMI needed to invest in road sweeping services 7-day-a-week for the surrounding area. Doing so would help keep the access roads and site clear of dust, debris and hazards.
Our solution
Soon into the project, GMI encountered difficulties finding a reliable company that could consistently provide a road sweeper hire 7 days a week throughout the contract, leading to them contacting Fletchers Waste Management. Due to us being able to run this service on our own wheels and with our own drivers, we were able to offer GMI a competitive rate. We also had the capacity to allocate staff outside of the normal working week, especially Sundays, which were a consistent issue with other suppliers. Fletchers became a reliable and flexible supplier of choice, and GMI transferred the contract to us.
Not providing a road sweeper 7-days-a-week had the potential to cause compliance and operational issues for GMI, which would cause a significant delay in handing over. Therefore, it was imperative that Fletchers Waste was able to keep pace with these requirements, ensuring a quick turnaround was feasible from the start.
Since working with GMI, we have provided a road sweeper and driver for an average of 50 hours a week. Helping to avoid delays to the project and ensuring the roads are kept tidy while building work is in operation, satisfying the Environmental Agency and limiting residential complaints. Our Account Manager has built a strong relationship with the customer from the start, working hard to ensure prices are competitive, out-of-hours charges are limited, drivers arrive on time, and waste is tipped responsibly at our own facility in Sheffield.
GMI prides itself on the work we do in the community as we give back to local people and worthwhile causes wherever we build. Ensuring a clean and tidy site and the surrounding area is important to us, and that’s why we linked up with experts such as Fletchers. We needed a supplier who shares our values and champions the work we do in the community. Fletchers is that partner when it comes to road sweeping. They have been a big part of the extended GMI team as we look to leave a legacy behind us. That means a super product and a spotless area for our end users to live in.
