Kirklees Council Seeking Views On Cultural Heart Development

Construction News Image
Kirklees Council is seeking input on the proposed second phase of their Kirklees Cultural Heart development.

The proposed development is "breathing new life" into the area between Queensgate, King Street and Victoria Lane in Huddersfield – the area currently known as the Piazza – which has seen decreasing footfall in recent years. It will see a £210 million investment by Kirklees Council.

The Cultural Heart is the beating heart of the Huddersfield Blueprint – our ambitious ten-year vision to create a thriving, modern-day town centre for Huddersfield. However, by redefining Huddersfield town centre, we also want to make this an amazing place to benefit people and businesses across Kirklees as a whole.

The plans involve refurbishing the historic Queensgate Market and Huddersfield Library to make a fantastic new food hall and museum. A new, improved library will be developed in a modern extension to the market building, and a brand new art gallery will be built on Queen Street.

Elsewhere, an amazing new entertainment venue – with a capacity of up to 2,200 people – is being designed to host everything from major concerts and live shows to business conferences and trade shows. There will also be a new multistorey car park.

Connecting all these exciting new developments will be beautiful open-air public spaces, including a public square that can host events, and an urban park with play space for families.

We did the first round of consultation on the Kirklees Cultural Heart earlier this year and got lots of feedback from residents and businesses across Kirklees.  This feedback has shaped the updated designs you’ll see during this phase of consultation.

During our last round of consultation, people who responded were particularly supportive of making Huddersfield town centre more welcoming, inclusive and accessible, as well as maintaining our beautiful heritage buildings.

As our goal is to create an amazing new place which will be loved by people who live, work in or visit Kirklees, your views are so important to help us develop these plans.
