Contractors Tolent have scooped a new £2.1m contract for the construction of a new ALDI retail store in Kingston Park, Newcastle.
The current contract for ALDI is with The Hanro Group, which will include design and construction of a 1,315 square metre retail store. This will be built with a structural steel frame on pad and strip foundations.
Additionally, Tolent is carrying out the construction of a new delivery yard as well as a further extension and reconfiguration to the existing parking bays. The project also aims towards improving pedestrian crossing routes and new public realm with seating.
There also remains a crucial pre-phase to the project that involves the demolition of the existing Peacock and Poundstretcher stores and Luciano’s Italian Restaurant, which have been vacant since October 2020 having been impacted by the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.
Steve Church, Regional Manager of Tolent, said: "We are very happy to be once again working on a project that shapes Newcastle and facilitates the people of the region. This project is being designed in a way that makes the new store well connected and accessible to different modes of transport. It is our fifth ALDI project, however, this is the first time we are working with The Hanro Group and we are excited to be entering into a new association with them."
Tolent has also worked with some of the biggest names in the retail industry like Morrisons, Lidl and M&S Foodhall over the years and have generated business above £100m through retail projects across the UK.
A council report from last year said that the new Aldi would be "well-connected and accessible by sustainable modes of transport" and "designed to promote community cohesion, wellbeing and to reflect and enhance the area’s character and natural environment".
The project is split into three phases and is due to be finished by end of this year. The works at site have been progressing rapidly and the steel structure is already in place.
Once complete the development will complement the existing businesses on the western side of Kingston Retail Park with provision in the area including M&S, Specsavers, Next and Boots bringing the area into full occupation and improving services and choice to local shoppers.
