Plans to develop a new primary school in south Powys have been approved.
Powys County Council is proposing to merge Mount Streets Infants School, Mount Street Junior School and Cradoc C.P. School to create a new primary school as part of Transforming Education plans for the Brecon catchment area.
The new school would initially operate on the three existing sites, before moving to a new building in Brecon, which will provide new, 21st century facilities for pupils.
The target date for establishing the new primary school is September 2023, with the move to a new building expected to take place during 2025/26.
Last December, Cabinet gave the go-ahead for a statutory notice to be published formally proposing the amalgamation of the three schools.
The plans will help the council deliver its Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys, a 10-year strategy that was approved in 2020.
Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: "After carefully considering the objections, Cabinet has approved the proposal to amalgamate Mount Streets Infants School, Mount Street Junior School and Cradoc C.P. School to create a new primary school.
"We are committed to transforming the learner experience and entitlement for our learners and we will achieve this by delivering our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys 2020-2030.
"As part of our Vision 2025, we are also committed to providing world-class facilities that will allow our learners and teachers to thrive and reach their potential. We believe that our exciting plans to establish a new primary school in the Brecon area, with a planned move to a new building in the future, show this commitment.
"I believe that our exciting plans for the Brecon catchment area will provide much improved facilities and opportunities for learners, and will help us deliver our strategy, and improve the education entitlement and experience for future learners."
