A masterplan has launched to create a new community in Wigan set around parklands and new improved public transport links.
Peel L&P's proposals at Mosley Common, south west of Walkden and east of Tyldesley would bring around 200 jobs to the local area and the public is being invited to have their say on the plans to help shape the vision.
The vision is to create a healthy living community with distinctive neighbourhoods that will be embedded into the area’s natural landscape of woodlands, watercourses and moss land with a new community and travel hub sitting at the heart of the scheme.
The proposals will provide 1,100 new homes to suit a range of needs including first time buyers, families, downsizers and older people with later living accommodation and around 25 per cent will be available for people with affordable housing needs.
Residents would have access within minutes to the Leigh Guided Busway which runs through the development with commuter routes to Manchester and further afield and a new bus stop would be built to serve the new community.
A new community and travel hub would also have space for independent local retailers and flexible spaces for events and classes and a network of footpaths, cycleways would improve access to Walkden train station and the site’s overall connectivity.
The development would also feature a new green corridor to bring ecological improvements to the area and connect people to nature and new parklands.
The site at Mosley Common has been identified for residential development as part of Greater Manchester’s emerging Places for Everyone plan which has now been submitted to the Secretary of State.
Annabel Partridge, Peel L&P’s Associate Director of Development Planning said: "Our masterplan for Mosley Common builds on the natural characteristics of the area to create a new community which focuses on housing for a mix of needs, sustainable travel, green spaces, better health and wellbeing opportunities and improved biodiversity.
"This is an investment of over £150 million for Wigan to support community wealth building within the borough and will create many jobs for the area.
"We're in the early stages of these plans and welcome the public's feedback to help shape the proposals so they best suit the needs of the community."
