Demolition Work Complete Of Former Care Home Buildings In Porth

Demolition work on the former Dan y Mynydd Care Home buildings in Porth has been completed.

The work got underway in early September 2021, in order to remove the unused care home buildings located off Bronwydd Avenue. Linc received planning permission for the demolition during May 2021, and appointed Bond Demolition Ltd as the contractor responsible for delivering the scheme.

Extra Care delivers modern accommodation with 24-hour support for older people’s assessed needs, allowing them to live as independently as possible. In partnership with Linc, the Council will deliver 300 places across five new developments.

With the Dan y Mynydd site being unused for some time, Cabinet agreed for one of the new Extra Care schemes to be built on the care home site in Porth. Part of a strategy to modernise residential care options for older people, it would become the third new facility to be built so far, following Maesyffynnon (Aberaman) and Cwrt yr Orsaf (Pontypridd).

In August, Linc gave the community an opportunity to have their say on the initial plans, in order to inform a final planning application. Linc submitted that application in September, for 60 apartments and associated works including landscaping, sustainable drainage, access and parking. The Planning and Development Committee will consider this application at a future meeting.

Councillor Geraint Hopkins, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for Adult Services, said: "With the demolition of the unused former Dan y Mynydd Care Home buildings now complete, the Council and Linc Cymru have reached the latest important milestone towards delivering a proposed new Extra Care scheme in Porth. The work undertaken in recent weeks has now unlocked the land for future redevelopment, and I’d like to thank the community for their cooperation during the site activity.

"We have seen the difference that Extra Care facilities make to their residents, offering opportunities for meaningful community engagement, while around the clock support can be relied upon for their assessed needs. Maesyffynnon in Aberaman has been an excellent addition to the community since it was built last summer, and I also recently had the pleasure of visiting some of the first residents moving into Cwrt yr Orsaf in Pontypridd, following its opening.

"The Council and its partner Linc will continue to work closely towards our joint goal to modernise our residential care provision for older people, including the next major development proposed for Porth. Linc has submitted the planning application for the proposal, which will formally be considered in due course.”"
